Finding somewhere to park up that evening wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. It's almost as if the authorities and landowners were used to backpackers bumming around the country in clapped out vehicles looking for places to park up ... Some of the biggest goldfields on the planet were discovered there in the 19th century and before you could say 'goldrush' the place was criss-crossed with a network of mines being dug feverishly by miners from around the world. ...
